Chapter 8: Celebrating Books

I LOVE the idea of the First Read Club!  What a great idea for our librarians!  I think students of all ages would be excited to see their names on stickers in the front of books.  It is a great way for students to leave a positive mark behind as they move through our schools.  What makes this a fabulous idea is that every classroom can also have a First Read Club.  It doesn't just need to happen in the library.

I think the Cafe idea for secondary is very appealing.  It meets just once a month in the morning and features refreshments along with a teacher and his/her favorite book.  Hearing one of your teachers read passages from a favorite book has got to draw some interest.   Following up with a photo/poster of the teacher and the favorite book is a great way to keep these books in the minds of students.

There are other easy to implement ways to celebrate books in this chapter.  I hope you find one that suits your style.

  1. I think I'm going to take the First Reads club a little further. I'm going to have the students write a short two paragraph blurb. The first paragraph will be a summary (sans spoilers.) The second will tell why they recommend the book. The book plate will not only display their name, but also the review. If it's all done electronically, I can even blog their review on the library website.
